Hago Zorg is a mobile platform that gives hospitals real-time insight in the hygenic status of a bed. It’s an extention to the cleaning services they provide. Better service by better insights.
Over 80.000 hospital beds are cleaned in a large hospital every year. Hospitals need insights for quality control and safety. Hago Zorg extended the service with a digital component using NFC chips and smartphones. This contributed to Hago Zorg being the #1 supplier to (6 out of 8) University Hospitals in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands 1 in 7.000 operations something is left behind in a body. This can be something small like a cotton, or something big like an instrument. The head of operations asked to use a design thinking approach to solve this problem from a fresh ‘out-of-the-box’ perspective.
This project resulted in a strategy with different project to reduce accidents on a short-term and completely exclude accidents on the long-term.
How can Google Glass contribute to health care? Every new tool brings new possibilities if you can find the right fit the upside can be huge. We set out to transform wound care.
We started with a proof of concept where we started remotely coached a wound care specialist by a doctor from a hospital. This resulted in trial where patients where treated with and without Google Glass. The patients treated with Google Glass had a reduction of 70% in hospital visits. Making the project a huge success. Following the trial Google Glass became part of the regular treatment.

Hospitals have regular audits regarding quality control. Those audits are done by experts filling in forms, scorecards and making reports.
We build a tool that highly automates this process. It helps auditers to report scores, check refererences and log events. This automatically translates to a digital score card send out the minute an auditer leaves the hospital. The tool also generates a draft report. Optimzing quality and efficiency.
The service was awarded with two industry leading innovation awards.
What is you start a news website from scratch and try to leverage technology the furthest we can. This is the question that got us started with EN.nl. We build a completely autonomous news website. A news service that learned readers behavior and adapted to the individual reader.
The year long journey brought learned us a lot about find a balance between editor’s and automation. The rise of personalisation. What people say they want and what they actually click. And how to build a strong technical news infrastructure that’s versatile and flexible. As a product owner I was responsible for the innovation project. The EN.nl project was a project of de Volkskrant Innovation department. The technology, research and learnings from EN.nl benefitted multiple sites and projects within de Volkskrant, resulting in an optimzed workflow and readers behavior.
Over the past decade the news industry is in a major transition. It has to reïnvent the business model and distribution model. At the same time, we consume more news then ever before. It’s a growth market that has to reinvent itself. This is what really attracted me to the media industry. De Volkskrant is a leading Dutch newspaper.
At the Volkskant I worked as Senior Interaction Designer and Product Owner for 5 years on a range of projects focussed on web, mobile and innovation. I did two redesigns of the major News website Volkskrant.nl. I build the first video player and worked on video distribution to mobile and smart TV’s. I worked on satellite websites around travel and opinion. I explored new distribution models of news resulting in the first API. I worked on mobile and widgets.
I love video. Over the past years I’ve designed and build all kinds of different video interfaces exploring this domain. I build the first embeddable videoplayer of a news organization in the Netherlands. This was for the Volkskrant.
The video below is a screen recording from the Urban Explorers video screen. Urban Explorers is a city festival. I made an interface that gathered all the video’s posted by reporters on a an external videoservice and collected them and ordered the through the API. Sorted based on tags used in the titles, users and festival locations.
Medialandschap was my graduation project where I took video’s recored with mobile phones and ordered them based on time and place.
